“An Image on Air” (2024) is a description shown on a surtitle board (typically used for translation during live performances) of scenes in which public figures on live broadcast reflect on the then novel experience of being “on air.” Installed upon a window originally at Maxwell Graham in the 2024 solo exhibition “Technical Difficulties,” the work in this placement renders the view of the street a live on-screen tableau. Moments of two public figures, twenty years apart, collide in an imaginary dialogue: Marshall McLuhan in 1977 on the Mike McManus show, and Fred Rogers in 1997 on the Charlie Rose show. Rogers reminds us, “What is essential is invisible to the eye.” McLuhan warns, “When you’re on the air, you’re a discarnate being.” A street scene unfolds.
Originally shown at Maxwell Graham Gallery May 1 - June 22, 2024, as part of a solo exhibition titled, "Technical Difficulties."
